Hello Readers!

This blog is what I shared at the end of the semester Worship Celebration Night. Pictures to follow.

To me, being creative is a form of worship because it helps me to draw inspiration from within and represent it through any ways, specifically art. I may not be able to give words to the piece of work, but the Lord knows what it means. The viewer gets to decide their own interpretation.

As some of you may know, this first semester here of CGA has been one of many seasons, including exploring emotions. I wanted to try something new, so I decided to paint things this semester. Through painting some I was able to display some emotions. There were several times when I would feel frustrated or angry and in a sense painting was like an art therapy. There usually weren’t any words, but the Lord knew what the paintings represented.

Early in the semester Mikahla Weigand came and spoke with our track about Creativity in Worship. A phrase she said was “we are all creatives and have the ability to create.”
In the book of Genesis, we see our Creator creating all things. We were formed and fashioned to create.

Being creative requires vulnerability. Being vulnerable allows you to walk more fully.
In the past I wouldn’t have considered myself to be a very artsy/creative person. I probably haven’t attempted to paint anything since middle school before this year. I remember not being very good at it or enjoying it much during those years and so I never bothered to paint.

I found a picture online and it became my inspiration for the pictures I have on display today. To me it represents being a new creation. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

A revelation that I had during one of my painting sessions is that you need to give the paint time to dry before you add more layers if you don’t want your colors to mix together. For me, I have found that God works our healing in layers a lot of times. We, as humans, have limitations, and we can only handle so much change/healing at a time, because it is painful and draining, and it just takes time to heal our wounds. I think that through painting I am learning to know myself a little more and am able to let go of some of my control & perfectionism tendencies. They say that to know the Lord is to know yourself and to know yourself you get to know the Lord. In a sense that is a definition of intimacy.

A truth that I was reminded of during a painting session is that the Lord is the potter (designer) and we (humans) are the clay (moldable/workable material)…He can make us into whatever He wants. Every piece that He creates is unique.

Also, I tried to incorporate a lot of the principles of design that we learned about in worship track that can be found in art. I feel like my paintings display: emphasis with the butterfly, contrast with the black backdrop, pattern on each color of the rainbow circle, variety in the white designs, unity because of the use of colors in the rainbow circle, and the use of radial balance because everything is centered around the butterfly.

My challenge to you: be willing to be creative in expressing things: music, singing, paintings, sculptures, drawings, etc.
Quote from Mikahla: “if you never step into creative vulnerability, you’ll never know those places about yourself. Tap into places that you didn’t know existed.”

Enjoy the photos!
